For more than four decades, Thomas M. Steighner Funeral Home has been honored to serve the families of Chicora and the surrounding area. Located in downtown Chicora at the intersection of East Slippery Rock and Main Streets, the funeral home has long been a familiar and trusted presence in the borough and remains the only funeral home within Chicora Borough limits.
The Steighner family’s involvement in funeral service in Chicora began in 1972, when Thomas and Rose Steighner purchased the former Clarence W. Vensel Funeral Home. The business itself traces its roots back to 1900, continuing a long tradition of care for local families.
Thomas Steighner entered the funeral profession in the early 1960s and became a licensed funeral director in 1967. After gaining experience in Pittsburgh and serving Butler County as its first Chief Deputy Coroner, he returned home to Chicora to lead the funeral home. Alongside his professional career, Tom has been deeply involved in the community, serving as Mayor of Chicora for many years, as well as participating in local organizations and his church.
Today, the family tradition continues with Tom and Rose’s daughter, Tammy Steighner-Ondik, a licensed funeral director who plans to carry the funeral home forward. Tammy brings a unique background to funeral service, combining decades of experience in both mortuary science and nursing. She holds advanced degrees in nursing and education and remains actively engaged in professional leadership and continuing education.
Both Tom and Tammy are active members of local, state, and regional funeral director associations and regularly complete continuing education to stay current with changes in funeral service. In addition, Tom holds a Pennsylvania life insurance license, providing added security for families who choose pre-arranged funeral plans.
Steighner Funeral Home is dedicated to helping families create services that are personal, meaningful, and reflective of the life being honored. The Steighners take pride in offering a welcoming, comfortable setting—one that feels more like home than a business—while treating every family with genuine care, respect, and attention.
