Mary Schubert Obituary

Mary E. Schubert, 97 of Chicora, PA went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2021. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA November 7, 1923 the only child of Earl David and Mary Duffy Shaw.

Mary graduated from Coraopolis High School in 1942. She married Fred R. Schubert on January 24,1943. They eloped to West Virginia because they were too young to get married in Pennsylvania. He served in the Army in World War II for three years before returning home. In 1960 they moved from Pittsburgh to the country near Chicora. Quite a change! They were married 53 years before his passing in 1996.

One of her earliest jobs was at Dravo Shipbuilding on Neville Island. We teased her about being “Rosie the Riveter” but she said she worked in the office. She had many jobs throughout her life, mostly in retail. She worked at Murphy’s in Pittsburgh and also in Butler. She worked at Bill’s Bargain and was manager of their clothing store. She retired in 1985 from Revco Drug Store. She then worked as a senior aide at United Way and the Art Center.

She was active in church as a Sunday School teacher, VBS helper, piano player and other areas. She especially enjoyed the ministry of Alliance Women at Faith Fellowship Alliance Church.

Mary participated in the March for Life in Washington DC and supported Life Choices. She was a poll worker for Donegal Township for many years. She had lots of late nights counting paper ballots!

She traveled many places when visiting her family. She saw the mountains in Montana, Pikes Peak in Colorado, and the Pacific Ocean in California. She enjoyed the Atlantic Ocean many times.  More important to her than sightseeing were those special times with her daughters and their families.

Chocolate and desserts might be the secret of longevity!  Mary loved them both. She always asked if there was dessert before taking seconds of supper.

Mary enjoyed reading. When she could no longer read because of macular degeneration she listened to audio books. Mary, sitting in her chair, headphones on, was a familiar sight on her hall at the Medical Center,

Mary truly cared about her family, her friends and her final extended family – the staff at Chicora Medical Center. She remembered birthdays, sports, illnesses, injuries, - good things and bad. She listened and maybe offered advice but always gave unconditional love.

Her family is thankful to Pastor Dick Jenks, Faith Fellowship Alliance Church, and Pastor Joe Olkowski, Zion of Petroleum Valley for their visits and the ministries of both churches.

Foremost, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Chicora Medical Center. They treated her like family and gave her outstanding care. During her difficult last months, it was comforting for us to know she was surrounded by people who cared for her so deeply.

She is survived by her daughters Kathryn “Kay” (Doug) Kent of Hamilton, MT;

Nancy (Edward) Weber of Chicora, PA;

Sandra (Mark) Douglas of Oceanside, CA. Also 12 grandchildren and many great and great- great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her daughter Mary Lou Jolene Brewer and a son in law, Chester E. Brewer both of Rocky Ford, CO.
