Alice Hemphill, 90, of Buena Vista, Chicora, Pennsylvania died at 12:15 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 in the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Butler.
She was born in Chicora, Pennsylvania Jan. 23, 1919, the daughter of Charles A. and Pearl Cooper Hoover.
She and her late husband owned and operated Hemphill's Greenhouse in Buena Vista from 1956 to 1992. She was the secretary for a dean at Slippery Rock University for several years.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chicora.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. David (Nancy) Leitem of Butler; a son, Gary Hemphill of West Middlesex; five grandchildren, Eric and Patrick Hemphill of Butler, Angela Hemphill of West Middlesex, Christopher and Terry Leitem of Callao, Va., and Amy and Jeff Scott of West Sunbury; a great-granddaughter, Alita Scott of West Sunbury; a sister, Grace Wolford of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Grace McKinnis of Meridian; and two nieces, Louann Gold and Jeanne Wilkerson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Hemphill, who she married July 21, 1942. He died June 24, 1995.
HEMPHILL - Friends of Alice Hemphill, who died Monday, June 15, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, 111 E. Slippery Rock and Main streets in Chicora. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. James Higgins, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Chicora, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillview Cemetery, Kepples Corners.
