Thomas A. Bell Jr.
Thomas A. Bell Jr., 48, of Butler, formerly of Karns City, died Friday surrounded by his loving family in Butler Memorial Hospital after fighting a courageous battle with ALS.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1965, in Butler, the son of the late Thomas A. Bell Sr. and Vicki D. Blakely Bell Smith of Karns City.
After graduating from Karns City High School in 1983, he attended Butler County Community College for a year and then he went to serve his country in the Navy for four years.
He then worked at Central Medical in Pittsburgh and at the VA in Pittsburgh, where he received a scholarship to further his education in the nursing field by attending Lenape School of Practical Nursing.
He then worked at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for a year and a half. He also worked at St. Barnabas Home in Valencia, where he received a scholarship to Indiana University where he earned a license as a personal care administrator.
He took this license to Shenley Garden Personal Care and worked as the director of nursing for four years. He ended his career at St. John's Nursing Home in Mars as a personal care administrator.
Throughout his nursing career, he received various awards as an administrator for his quality care and service.
Tommy was diagnosed with ALS three and a half years ago. However, he was able to work for two and a half more years because of his love of nursing.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his significant other, Shane Patrick Parsell of Butler Township; brothers, Joseph Bell of Chicora and his fiancee, Sonia Ion of Karns City and Richie Bell of Karns City; a sister, Tricia R. Smith of Chicora; a nephew, Lewis Smith, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Troy Allan Bell; his paternal grandmother, Alberta Fair Bell; his paternal grandfather, Paul W. Bell, and his maternal grandmother, Clara E. Blakely.
BELL - There is no visitation for Thomas A. Bell Jr., who died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013.
A memorial service commemorating his life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of God of Prophecy, 1510 Kittanning Pike, Karns City, with the Rev. Ronald Roudebush, pastor, officiating.
Military honors will be provided by the Chicora VFW, the Chicora American Legion and the Bradys Bend American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to Tommy's Troopers, c/o ALS Association, 416 Lincoln Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. 15209.
