Richard E. Umstead

September 25, 1947 ~ May 6, 2016 (age 68) 68 Years Old

Richard E. Umstead, age 68 of Chicora, PA. died early Friday morning May 6, 2016 in the Chicora Medical Center following a lengthy illness.  He was born in Chicora, September 25, 1947 the son of the late Delbert R. Umstead and the late Martha E. Iman Umstead.

After graduating in 1965 from Karns City High School, he served his country proudly in the U.S. ARMY during the Vietnam era.  He enjoyed playing baseball and softball from little league to adulthood. In later years he played for the K & R Green League. He was a big fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers Football and March Madness Basketball. He delighted in watching old movies, old westerns, old police shows, and enjoyed country music, beaches and traveling.  He worked 35 years for Sonneborn in Petrolia, many of those years as a shipping operator. He was a member of the Chicora V.F.W, the Chicora American Legion, the Chicora Moose Lodge and the I.A.M.U.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara M. Craig Umstead whom she married July 19, 1974,   A daughter, Angela R. Stahlman of Penn Hills, Pittsburgh. A granddaughter, Brianna L. Stahlman of La Mesa, California.  A sister, Sally Wellman of San Jacinto, California. A brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, William Craig and his wife Mary Lou of Gillette, Wyoming. A sister-in-law, Eileen Balance and her husband Lee of Norfolk, Virginia.  A sister-in-law, Maxine Craig of Chicora and an Uncle, John Iman of Chicora, also, several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He is preceded in death by a sister, Jean Kaiser and her husband, William Kaiser, Sr. and a nephew, William Kaiser, Jr.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, at the corner of 111 E. Slippery Rock and Main Streets, in the heart of Chicora, Pennsylvania.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, with the Reverend Joseph Boomhower, officiating.

Full Military Honors will be provided by the Chicora V.F.W. and Chicora and Brady’s Bend American Legion and the 99th Readiness Command from Coraopolis.

Burial will follow in Hemphill Cemetery, Chicora, PA
